The International Nuremberg Principles Academy has started an interdisciplinary project in 2022 on situating hate speech in the context of international criminal law (ICL). This project is the result of an exploratory work conducted throughout 2020-2021, assessing how it could advance the discussion in the field of hate speech and ICL. Mindful that there is no clear concept of ‘hate’ speech in ICL, the Nuremberg Academy started to assess how a better understanding of ‘hate speech’ in ICL would help define the role of ICL in either preventing the commission or addressing accountability for core international crimes. The starting point of the project is to research, through a multi-disciplinary lens, how ‘hate speech’ is understood through international criminal case law.
