Nuremberg Academy Lecture: Professor Leila N. Sadat

01 April 2025

The Long Arc of Justice: Forging a Convention for Crimes Against Humanity

The 2025 Nuremberg Academy Lecture will be delivered by Professor Leila N. Sadat on 1 April 2025 at the historic Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice. The lecture will focus on the history, development and complexities that have defined the place of crimes against humanity in international law.

The lecture will look to the past, to the present and to the future of this sometimes-forgotten international crime, examining its early history in the condemnation of the transatlantic slave trade, its subsequent emergence in positive law after World War II. The lecture will also explore its critical role in modern day international criminal adjudication, and, finally, its future codification in a new global treaty, the work on which will occur over the next five years.

Professor Leila Nadya Sadat is the Director of the Crimes Against Humanity Initiative, a project responsible for drafting the world’s first treaty on crimes against humanity. From 2012-2023, she served as Special Adviser on Crimes Against Humanity to the International Criminal Court Prosecutor. Professor Sadat is also the James Carr Professor of International Criminal Law of the Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute at Washington University Law School and a Fellow at the Schell Center for Human Rights at Yale Law School.

The lecture will begin at 5.30 pm and conclude at 7.30 pm. It is open to the public free of cost and without pre-registration. There will be a reception at the end of the lecture to which all attendees are heartily invited.

Katja Keul, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office will attend the lecture and deliver welcoming remarks.
