Integrity in International Justice
The “Integrity project”, led by the International Nuremberg Principles Academy (Nuremberg Academy) and the Centre for International Law Research and Policy (CILRAP), explored the role of individual integrity and high moral character in international justice institutions. The project led to an international conference held in The Hague and an edited volume, the first book-length treatment of the topic.
The project considered integrity in international justice in a legal framework and also considered the concept in a historical, philosophical, and religious context. The project addressed questions such as
- What is integrity in the context of justice?
- What are the roles of States in upholding integrity in international justice?
- What builds individual awareness and cultures of integrity?
- How can we give maximum effect to existing “integrity” mechanisms?
- What can specific cases tell us about integrity in international justice?
- What is the relationship between the principles of integrity and independence?
Morten Bergsmo’s policy brief Revisiting Integrity in International Justice explains in more depth the focus and the background of the project.
An international expert conference on “Integrity in International Justice” was held in the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, on 1-2 December 2018. The “Integrity Project” also led to the publication of an anthology titled Integrity in International Justice and edited by Morten Bergsmo and Viviane Dittrich, published as the fourth volume in the Nuremberg Academy Series in 2020. It is the first book-length publication to address integrity in international justice in a comprehensive manner. Thirty-three chapters discuss in-depth the meaning of integrity, awareness and culture of integrity, the roles of international organizations and states as well as international courts in enhancing integrity, integrity as seen through the lens of cases, and the relationship between the principles of independence and integrity. The book considers integrity as a legally binding standard in international courts, while including perspectives from other disciplines such as philosophy, history, psychology and religion. A short film introducing the anthology can be found here.
The open access e-book version of the book can be downloaded from the Nuremberg Academy website. An online book launch was held on 2 February 2021 and the video recording of the book launch is available online.
