A panel discussion on judicial ethics and the relevance of the ETHICA project was conducted during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Nuremberg Moot Court on 24 July 2024. The event was carried out in Courtroom 600 and the panel was composed of Professor Dr Christoph Safferling, Director of the Nuremberg Academy, Jean-François Thony, President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights and Kiran Mohandas Menon, Senior Officer at the Nuremberg Academy.
Professor Dr Safferling introduced the ETHICA project and elaborated on the project´s background as well as on its unique and pertinent contribution to the discourse on judicial ethics pertaining to international criminal judges. Mr Thony highlighted the importance of the different parts of the ETHICA document and spoke of how they reflected a necessary consensus among international criminal justice institutions on the need for such principles. This consensus was exhibited by the participation of the presidents of 5 international courts and tribunals in the drafting of the principles. Mr Mohandas Menon detailed the history of judicial ethics in the context of international criminal proceedings drawing examples from various historic and modern international courts and tribunals.
The Ethical Principles for International Criminal Judges are intended to provide guidance on ethical issues.
