Successful Conclusion of the 10th Edition of the Nuremberg Summer-Anglophone Edition

The Nuremberg Academy successfully concluded the 10th edition of Nuremberg Summer Academy for Young Professionals-anglophone edition, held online from 4 to 15 August 2025. 

This two-week intensive programme continued the Academy's mission of strengthening capacity of those involved in in international criminal law. Carefully designed for young legal professionals from conflict or underserved regions, the Academy offered an immersive learning experience complete with live lectures, panel discussion, group case studies, interactive discussions, and guided self-study through the Moodle platform.  The course brought together 19 participants from 11 countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Georgia, Iraq, Lebanon, Myanmar, Nepal and Ukraine. 

Led by distinguished academics and practitioners, the course covered key themes in international criminal law, addressing both substantive and procedural dimensions of investigation, prosecution, and adjudication of core international crimes. This year’s experts included: 

  • Introduction to International Criminal Law: Darleen Seda (Nuremberg Academy)

  • International Crimes, Part I – Introduction to International Humanitarian Law and War Crimes: Prof. Dr Ray Murphy (Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway)

  • International Crimes, Part II – Crimes against Humanity: Prof. Dr Leila Sadat (Washington University in St. Louis)

  • International Crimes, Part III – Genocide: H.E. Adama Dieng (African Union)

  • International Crimes, Part IV – Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, and Crimes against Children: Alison McFarlane (United Nations)

  • Modes of Liability: Dr Manuel Ventura (Western Sydney University)

  • Investigation and Prosecution of International Crimes: Brenda Hollis (formerly, International Criminal Court)

  • Victim Rights in International Criminal Law: Megan Hirst (Doughty Street Chambers)

  • International Fair Trial Standards: The Rights of the Defence: Marie-Hélène Proulx (International Criminal Court Bar Association)

  • National Prosecutions of International Crimes: Assoc. Prof. Dr Étienne Ruvebana (University of Rwanda), Dr. Ines Peterson (Office of the German Federal Public Prosecutor General), Catalina Diaz (Special Jurisdiction for Peace)

  • International Cooperation and Judicial Assistance: Dahirou Sant-Anna (International Criminal Court)

  • Current Challenges in International Criminal Justice: Judge Raul Cano Pangalangan (University of the Philippines)

At the end of the course, all participants took part in a written examination and received a certificate of attendance,
