On 27 and 28 February 2025, the Nuremberg Academy participated in an international conference titled “Nagorno-Karabakh: Refugees, Rights and Opportunities” at the Matenadaran – Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, in Yerevan, Armenia. Senior Officers Kiran Mohandas Menon and Dr Gurgen Petrossian as well as Project Officer Dr Pablo Gavira Díaz represented the Academy in a two-days event that aimed at offering a platform for addressing multifaceted and contentious issues stemming from the second Nagorno-Karabakh war.
Mr Menon’s presentation elaborated on the possibilities of universal jurisdiction and extraterritorial proceedings and the importance of developing specialised units within prosecutorial and investigative agencies in this context. Dr Petrossian moderated the last panel on “Challenges in protecting historical and cultural heritage under international law”, where Dr Gavira Díaz focused on the protection of historical and cultural heritage under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, with a case study on the destruction of Armenian heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh.
