Biography
Since 2007, Professor Stefanie Schmahl has been Professor of German and Foreign Law, International Law and European Law at the University of Würzburg, where she also holds a seat on the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Model United Nations.
In 2011, Professor Schmahl served as attorney of record for the German Federal Government in a trial before the European Court of Human Rights, and from 2011 to 2013 she was a member of the “Unabhängige Kommission zu Fragen des Abgeordnetenrechts beim Deutschen Bundestag” (“Independent Commission on Questions Related to the Law of German Federal Parliament Members”). Since 2012, she has also served an alternate member on the Board of Directors of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights.
Professor Schmahl has published works on numerous topics of German and European public law and international law. Most recently, she published a legal commentary on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, entitled “Kinderrechtskonvention mit Zusatzprotokollen” (“Convention on the Rights of the Child, with Supplementary Protocols”) (2013).She studied law at the Universities of Mainz, Geneva and Heidelberg.
Professor Schmahl was awarded a PhD by the University of Mainz in 1996 and a degree of habilitation by the University of Potsdam in 2004. Before taking up her post at the University of Würzburg, she held professorships at the Universities of Tübingen, Regensburg, Bremen and Düsseldorf. In the 2015 summer semester she was a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at Cambridge University.
