Biography

Professor Dr Piotr Hofmański received his doctoral promotion at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń in 1981. He was then associated with the University of Silesia in Katowice, where he obtained his habilitation, and the University of Białystok. Since 2002, he has been a full professor of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where he currently heads the Kraków Center for International Criminal Justice. Professor Hofmański is a specialist in the field of criminal law and procedure as well as international criminal law. 

He is the author of over 300 scientific publications and has held prestigious scholarships from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), NATO and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Throughout his academic career, Professor Hofmański has served as a guest lecturer at numerous universities around the world, including institutions in Germany, Austria, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Australia, the United States and Spain. 
He has served as an expert for the Council of Europe, contributing to various committees dealing with transnational justice. 

Between 2005 and 2015, he was a judge of the Polish Supreme Court. From 2015 to 2024, he served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as its President from 2021 to 2024. 

He is currently Appointed member of the Roster of International Judges at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in the Constitutional Court. Professor Hofmański has been awarded honorary doctorates (Doctor honoris causa) from the Universitity of Gdańsk and the University of Białystok. He is also a knight of numerous state decorations, including the Belgian Grand-Croix de l'Ordre de la Couronne.
