International Opening Event: “Accountability and the Nuremberg Principles – 70 years after the Nuremberg Trials”

The International Opening Celebrations for the International Nuremberg Principles Academy were held on 6 and 7 June, 2015.

The Nuremberg Trials and the Nuremberg Principles are considered milestones in modern international criminal law. The International Nuremberg Principles Academy is intended to promote and further develop modern international criminal law on the basis of this legacy. For that purpose, it is establishing an international forum at the historic site of the Nuremberg Trials, as a place to discuss current issues in international criminal law and to promote peace through law.

The Academy was officially opened by German Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer, and Nuremberg Mayor Dr. Ulrich Maly.

Members of the Advisory Council of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy presented their ideas for the Academy's future work and activities: Auschwitz survivor and former Judge at the International Court of Justice Thomas Buergenthal, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, and famed international criminal law expert David Tolbert discussed how impunity for the worst crimes against humanity can be combated most effectively.

Further discussion forums with the participation of such panelists as Chief Prosecutor at the Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia Serge Brammertz addressed the lessons learned from the Nuremberg Trials and the future of international criminal justice.
