On 23 April 2025, the team of the Nuremberg Academy visited the Nuremberg Correctional Centre, the second largest prison in the Free State of Bavaria after the one in Munich. Director Thomas Vogt and correctional officer Frank Edelmann welcomed the Academy’s team and led them to the historic wings of the prison. These were used to host nearly 200 defendants who faced charges of complicity, crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg Trials (1945-1949).
The visit provided for an in-depth account of the history of the Nuremberg Correctional Centre, including how it was designed and how it worked during the proceedings of the International Military Tribunal. Mr Edelmann shared with excitement anecdotes about the defendants and those who took care of them, including military officers and medical staff. The Academy’s team showed interest and appreciation throughout the visit and enjoyed the time and information provided by Director Vogt and Mr Edelmann. (pg)
