Side Event at the 16th Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute

On the occasion of the 16th Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, which took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, from 4 to 14 December 2017, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy organized a side event on the topic "From Nuremberg to The Hague and Beyond: Critical Reflections on the State of Criminal Justice Today" on 7 December 2017.

Invited speakers of the event were Dr. Navi Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and President of the Advisory Council of the Nuremberg Academy, Dr. Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals and Vice-President of the Advisory Council of the Nuremberg Academy, Mr. David Tolbert, President of the International Center for Transitional Justice and Member of the Advisory Council of the Nuremberg Academy and Mr. William Pace, Convenor of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court. Dr. Guido Hildner, Director of Public International Law of the German Federal Foreign Office, gave the introductory remarks. Dr. Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director of the Nuremberg Academy, moderated the discussion.

The panel critically reflected on current challenges and principal developments in the field. The work of the Nuremberg Academy was highlighted, including recent and ongoing projects related to the application, development, and acceptance of international criminal law and human rights and its unique contributions in terms of research, capacity building and conferences. The discussion touched on how this work and the principal developments can and will advance the work of the International Criminal Court and States Parties and how cooperation can be strengthened.
