From 17 until 20 June 2025, Jolana Makraiová, Senior Officer for Interdisciplinary Research, attended the No Hate Speech Week in Strasbourg representing the International Nuremberg Principles Academy. The event was organised by the Anti-discrimination Department of the Council of Europe in the framework of an EU-CoE joint project and supported by the Maltese Presidency of the Council of Europe. The three-day event provided an opportunity to exchange views on recent legal and policy developments, as well as good practices in implementation and innovation for combating hate speech. It also aimed to foster synergies between key partners. Jolana presented the work of the Nuremberg Academy, including the report Understanding hate speech within the context of international criminal law (2023). In addition, she attended various workshops and plenaries reflecting on how the Nuremberg Academy can further advance some of the pertaining challenges and ultimately advance international criminal justice.
The No Hate Speech Week gathered a wide range of stakeholders, including but not limited to governmental representatives, national authorities, CSOs active at European and national level, and academia. It gathered around 100 participants selected for the No Hate Speech week, specifically, and engaged an additional 100 experts working on the Council of Europe’s thematic areas, including equality and non-discrimination.
