Review conference on the ICC’s Rome Statute in South Korea

09 April 2025

From 9 to 11 April 2025, Professor Dr Christoph Safferling, Director of the Nuremberg Academy, visited Seoul to attend a review conference on the ICC’s Rome Statute. His trip began with visits to the Diplomatic Academy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the War Memorial of Korea. The latter proved particularly insightful, offering a poignant reflection on the human cost of war and the lasting importance of peace. During his stay, he also had the opportunity to engage with several colleagues.

On 10 April 2025, Professor Dr Safferling participated in a conference at the Goethe-Institute in Seoul, hosted by the German Embassy. There, he emphasised the continued relevance of the Nuremberg Principles, particularly in light of the forthcoming reform of the ICC.

The conference concluded with a detailed presentation and discussion, moderated by Professor Dr Safferling, on the legal steps necessary to amend the ICC Statute. The discussion involved numerous representatives from Asian states, all preparing for the upcoming Review Conference scheduled for 7 July 2025. (bk)
