The Nuremberg Principles Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Catholic University of America and the International Nuremberg Principles Academy organised together with other partners the conference “The Nuremberg Principles: The Contemporary Challenges” at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., USA, on 27 March 2023. Conference was livestreamed and hosted virtually.

This conference brought together lawyers, historians, theologians and human rights activists from around the world to discuss the applicability of the Nuremberg Principles in protecting human dignity, promoting human rights and enforcing international criminal law in the context of today.

Academy Director Professor Dr Christoph Safferling contributed his expertise as a speaker to two panels, “Judges' Trial and Trial of the Doctors: Reflections on the Rule of Law & Medical Ethics” and “Ukraine's Nuremberg – Alleged War Crimes Issues: Review of Political/Military Situation and Legal Issues as of the Date of the Conference“.

Deputy Director Dr Viviane Dittrich moderated the opening panel on “The I.M.T. 1945-1946 at Nuremberg: U.S., France, British, Soviet Union, and German Perspectives and Subsequent N.M.T. (1946-1949) Impact on American Law”.

The Nuremberg Academy hosted a reception following the conference. Academy Director Professor Dr Christoph Safferling opened the reception with some general remarks on the importance of the Nuremberg Principles today and the mission of the Nuremberg Academy.

The conference was hosted by the Institute for Policy Research at The Catholic University of America in partnership with the International Research and Documentation Center for War Crimes Trials at the Philipps-University Marburg, Federal Ministry of Justice of the Federal Republic of Germany, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, D.C., the International Nuremberg Principles Academy, and Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

Prior registration for on-site or online participation was required. Registration was free.
