On 11 July 2026, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy, the T.M.C. Asser, Instituut Ukrainian Legal Advisory Group and the ZMINA Human Rights Centre jointly organised a public discussion on the implications of the European Court of Human Rights' Grand Chamber judgment in Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia.
Following opening remarks by Gabriela Radu (T.M.C. Asser Instituut) and Dr Gurgen Petrossian (International Nuremberg Principles Academy), an expert panel discussed how the judgment can strengthen accountability and support justice for victims of crimes committed in Ukraine's occupied territories since 2014.
The discussion highlighted the judgment's significance across multiple legal fields, including international criminal law, international humanitarian law, investment law, environmental law, civil claims, and State responsibility. Speakers examined how the Court's findings help define the legal parameters of Russia's conduct in the international armed conflict and how they may be used in domestic and international proceedings.
The panel featured Onysiia Syniuk (ZMINA Human Rights Centre), Professor Marko Milanovic (University of Reading), Alina Pavliuk (Ukrainian Legal Advisory Group), Kyrylo Kyryltsev (Ministry of Justice of Ukraine), and Denys Lysenko (Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine).
The event demonstrated the value of an interdisciplinary approach to accountability and illustrated how the ECtHR judgment provides an important legal framework for future accountability efforts relating to Russia's aggression against Ukraine. (gp)
