Commemorative Event for Dr Oscar Schneider

27 March 2026

Courtroom 600, Bärenschanzstrasse 72, 90429 Nuremberg

Franconian Association for Culture, Politics and Contemporary History, Memorium Nuremberg Trials

On 27 March 2026 we are honouring, together with the Franconian Association for Culture, Politics and Contemporary History (Fränkische Gesellschaft für Kultur, Politik und Zeitgeschichte e.V.) and the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, former Federal Minister Dr Oscar Schneider with an afternoon workshop discussion and an evening commemorative event.

Dr Schneider, who passed away on 29 December 2024, at the age of 97, shaped Nuremberg’s culture of remembrance through decades of tireless dedication. He was a key initiator of the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds, opened in 2001, and played a decisive role in establishing the Memorium Nuremberg Trials in 2010. He was also the driving force behind the International Nuremberg Principles Academy, founded in 2014.

The afternoon workshop discussion, titled “Nuremberg’s Culture of Remembrance after Dr Oscar Schneider”, will bring together local and national experts to reflect on Nuremberg’s particular responsibility in commemorating National Socialism and addressing the legacy of Nazi crimes, both a national and international level. In light of the city’s historical significance and its global association with hope for justice and a responsible engagement with the past, the discussion will explore what this responsibility means in practical terms today.

The public evening event, starting at 6.00 pm, titled “In Memory of Dr Oscar Schneider: Dealing with the Past – Responsibility for the Future”, will be followed by a reception. Held at the historic Courtroom 600, the ceremony will honour Dr Schneider’s life and achievements. The Bavarian Minister President, Dr Markus Söder, along with representatives of the organising institutions, politics and the judiciary, will pay tribute to his legacy and personality.

The event will be held in German and is free of charge. Admission from 5.30 pm via the Memorium Nuremberg Trials.

To take part, you must register online in advance. The deadline for registrations is 22 March, or when maximum capacity is reached. You can register here. (em)
