Stadt(ver)führungen: A Nuremberg Model for the Russian Invasion of Ukraine?

The Nuremberg Academy took part in the Nuremberg programme “Stadt(ver)führungen” on 16 September 2023. Under the heading “A Nuremberg Model for the Russian Invasion of Ukraine” Nuremberg Academy Director Professor Safferling moderated a panel consisting of Eleni Chaitidou, Senior Legal Officer at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and former Senior Officer at the International Criminal Court in The Hague and Dr Gurgen Petrossian, Senior Officer at the Nuremberg Academy. Starting with the Nuremberg trials the experts covered the adoption of the Genocide Convention, the development of international criminal law in the 1990s and the creation of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Finally, the pressing questions concerning the Russian Aggression in Ukraine were addressed: Is the International Criminal Court competent to prosecute the crimes committed in Ukraine? Why is the crime of aggression special and does not fall within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court? Would a special mechanism be advisable? About forty visitors came to Courtroom 600 and discussed these questions with the experts. We are already now looking forward to the “Stadt(ver)führungen“ 2024.
