International Conference on the War in Ukraine with Presentation by Anabela Alves

On 24 and 25 February 2023, Senior Officer Anabela Alves represented the Nuremberg Academy at the international conference titled “La guerre russo-ukrainienne, un an après : enjeux et perspectives”. The event marked the one-year anniversary since the invasion by Russia and the ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. It was organised by Professor Roger Koudé, Holder of the UNESCO Chair "Memory, Cultures and Interculturality" at the Catholic University of Lyon, as part of the Nelson Mandela Decade for Peace (2019-2028), instituted by the United Nations.

Ms Alves participated in the panel addressing the judicial implications of the Russo-Ukrainian war as a challenge for international criminal justice. She spoke of the legacy of the Nuremberg Principles, its scope and the role of international criminal justice today. She also addressed the judicial consequences of a selective justice, potential alternatives to the European joint investigation teams and the International Criminal Court to ensure justice for victims of the ongoing war as well as current challenges for international criminal justice.

The institutional partners of the UNESCO Chair together with the Catholic University of Lyon will be publishing the various interventions.
