Side Event on “Gender-Based Violence in International Law” on the Occasion of the International Law Week in New York

On the occasion of the International Law week at the UN in New York the Nuremberg Academy hosted a side-event together with the German Mission to the UN in the German House in New York on 26 October 2023. Director Professor Dr Christoph Safferling moderated a discussion on “gender-based violence in international law”. Panellists were Professor Lisa Davis from CUNY – City University New York – an expert on gender and law, who just recently drafted the gender persecution policy paper for the Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, Sofia Candeias, who is with the UN group of experts on rule of law and sexual violence in conflict, and the Judge of the German Federal Court of Justice, Ute Hohoff, the German candidate for the ICC. The fruitful discussion relied on the expertise of the panellists from the ICC, the UN and the domestic judiciary. Whereas there already is a good normative framework in place, thus was the outcome of the discussion, we need to work towards filling this framework and execute the norms.
