On 8 May 2023, Professor Dr Frédéric Mégret (McGill University) visited the Nuremberg Academy and gave a talk on “International Criminal Law and the Symbolic Economy of Stigma”. His paper was an attempt to shed light on the meta language of international criminal justice. He spoke on the pitfalls of linguistic inflation, the authority of international criminal lawyers and the allocation of stigma. In particular, he addressed concerns about the excessive trivialisation or problematic rarefication of international criminal offences. Deputy Director Dr Viviane Dittrich chaired the session, which saw an engaging discussion following Professor Mégret’s talk.
