The Nuremberg Academy participated in International Symposium on the Tokyo Trial in Shanghai

 

The International Nuremberg Principles Academy was invited to participate in the 2018 International Symposium on the 70th Anniversary of the Judgement of the Tokyo Trial, a conference organized by the Center for the Tokyo Trial Studies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China, from 11 to 13 November. Dr. Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director of the Nuremberg Academy, gave a talk on “The Ongoing Significance of Nuremberg and Tokyo”. It focused in particular on the legacies of the Nuremberg trial, the Nuremberg Principles and the work of the Nuremberg Academy today, including the international conference entitled “70 Years Later: The International Military Tribunal for the Far East” held in Nuremberg in May 2018.

Marking the exact day of the 70th anniversary of the judgment the International Symposium brought together more than 20 scholars and experts from institutions in China, Japan, Israel, the United Kingdom and Germany. The panel sessions covered the following four topics: 1) The Significance of the Tokyo Trial and the Nuremberg Trial; 2) Tokyo Trial; 3) War Crimes Trials in the Asia Pacific Region; and 4) Legacy of War.
