On 17 July 2024, Director Professor Dr Christoph Safferling, Senior Officer Dr Gurgen Petrossian, and Project Officer Dr Pablo Gavira remotely participated in an ordinary meeting of the Study Group on Governance. The Nuremberg Academy’s delegation presented the feasibility study on Benchmarks for International Criminal Justice, a project developed together with The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) between 2019 and 2022. Dr Rodrigo Núñez represented HiiL in the meeting.
Both Professor Safferling and Dr Petrossian explained the background, methodology and scope of the project. They placed special emphasis on the indicators that could potentially measure the effectiveness of international criminal justice’s mechanisms. The audience showed interest in the target groups envisioned by the project, as well as in the benefits and risks of developing international benchmarks. Following the presentation, the participants engaged in a lively discussion, which focused specifically on the expectations and approaches of victims.
The Study Group on Governance was established by a resolution of the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2010. As part of its mandate, the Study Group aims at developing proposals that may improve the efficiency of the Court. One of the Nuremberg Academy’s lines of research is currently exploring avenues for achieving the same goal, including the project on the Length of Proceedings at the ICC. (gp, pg)
