Visit by the Diplomatenkolleg 2022 of the German Federal Foreign Office's Foreign Service Academy

On 28 September 2022, the Nuremberg Academy welcomed a group of 19 diplomats stationed in Berlin, who were interested in knowing more about the Nuremberg Academy and its commitment to the promotion of international criminal law. The diplomats are part of the Diplomatenkolleg (Diplomats' College) 2022 of the German Federal Foreign Office's Foreign Service Academy. The visit represented one station of their study tour to Nuremberg, which also led them to the Memorium Nuremberg Trials and to The Hague for a visit of the International Criminal Court – a journey from the place where modern international criminal law was born to where the latter is currently growing up.

Project Officer Dr Pablo Gavira Díaz presented the Nuremberg Academy, its main activities and events, providing for a historical and legal approach of the Nuremberg trials. The discussion that followed the presentation was very enriching and involved a number of questions on existing challenges in the field of international criminal justice. In this regard, special attention was paid to the crucial role of domestic tribunals in investigating and prosecuting individuals for the commission of international crimes.
