Director Klaus Rackwitz Gives Lecture at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

On 12 July, the Academy's Director Klaus Rackwitz was invited to lecture about "Complementarity and Cooperation – The Role of Territorial States in Proceedings before the ICC" at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nuremberg. The international students of the Human Rights Master Program learnt more about the history of international courts and tribunals, the establishment of the ICC, universal jurisdiction, complementarity and the cooperation between the ICC and States parties.

In his remarks, Klaus Rackwitz emphasized that the state parties are the place of primacy jurisdiction, not the ICC. This creates a fundamental difference to the tribunals established before the ICC. Without effective cooperation from the state parties, the ICC is not in a position to handle a case from investigation up to appeals.

This lecture was part of the module on International Criminal Law directed by Dr. Hilde Farthofer.
