Seminar for Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace

From 24 to 28 June 2024, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy (Nuremberg Academy), the Asser Institute and the Antonio Cassese Initiative held a seminar for 18 magistrates and staff members of Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace at the premises of the Asser Institute in The Hague. The seminar aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and skills in relation to the investigation, adjudication and judicial management of cases involving war crimes and crimes against humanity. It followed two days of online seminars, which took place on 28 and 30 May.

The seminar constituted the first capacity-strengthening initiative organised by the Nuremberg Academy in Spanish. Project Officer Dr Pauline Martini designed and coordinated the programme together with Dr Marta Bo, Senior Researcher at the Asser Institute and member of the Antonio Cassese Initiative.

Dr Martini represented the Nuremberg Academy with Project Officer Dr Pablo Gavira Díaz during the seminar. She delivered the opening speech and participated in a panel discussion on positive complementarity and the Colombian experience, while Dr Gavira Díaz taught a case study session on the qualification of international crimes. Both also moderated a roundtable discussion on comparative perspectives on transitional justice and reparations respectively. Trainers comprised renowned academics and practitioners, including several staff members of the International Criminal Court. (pm)
