Nuremberg Academy Event at the 14th Assembly of State Parties of the ICC

On the occasion of the 14th Assembly of State Parties of the ICC which took place in The Hague, the Nuremberg Academy presented itself at a Side Event on 24 November 2015.

Following a short introduction by Dr. Pascal Hector (Director of International law, German Federal Foreign Office), Prof. Dr. Thomas Buergenthal gave a presentation about the Academy. Prof. Buergenthal, who serves as the President of the Academy’s Advisory Council, informed the audience about the foundational concept and framework of the Academy. In doing so, Prof. Buergenthal emphasized the Academy’s commitment to the fight against impunity for the most heinous crimes. He also stressed that the location of the Academy in Nuremberg – the place of the Nuremberg trials after World War II – has a high symbolic value.

Prof. Buergenthal was joined by other honorable members of the Academy’s Advisory Council, including Dr. Athaliah Molokomme, Dr. Navi Pillay, Prof. Dr. Sang-Hyun Song and Dr. Serge Brammertz, who expressed their personal commitment to the Academy and to international criminal law more generally.

The Academy is pleased to have attracted an overwhelming approval from the audience. In particular, many young lawyers and law students from around the world were present and raised interesting questions and suggestions.
