We were delighted to welcome our “neighbours” of the Nuremberg judiciary on 17 April 2023. We invited officials and staff of the Nuremberg courts to get to know the Academy, its work and its premises in the east wing of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice.
After the completion of a new building for the criminal justice branches of the Nuremberg Regional Court and the Higher Regional Court and the ending of court hearings in Courtroom 600, the Academy could move into the premises in the east wing of the Palace of Justice in October 2020. The founders had already designated this location for the Academy when it was established.
The event started with opening remarks by Academy Director, Professor Dr Christoph Safferling, and the President of the Higher Regional Court of Nuremberg, Dr Thomas Dickert. Then Dr Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director, led the presentation of the Academy, with a focus on its mandate, history and activities. She emphasised the impact of the Academy, its international reach and location in immediate proximity and with direct access to the historic Courtroom 600, a place of great significance for the field of international criminal law. All team members contributed short presentations of a specific project or aspect of the Academy's work. The presentations were followed by a lecture on “The Nuremberg trial and the war in Ukraine” given by Professor Safferling.
The reception that concluded the event allowed for lively exchanges between the guests and the team members.
