On 27 June 2024 Deputy Director Dr Viviane Dittrich was invited to participate in an Expert Convening on the Future Architecture of Accountability for Atrocity Crimes organised by the US Institute of Peace. The hybrid meeting, convened and chaired by Ambassador David Scheffer and Ambassador Pierre-Richard Prosper, brought together international experts including academics and practitioners in the field of international criminal law.
The first session considered how to strengthen international accountability mechanisms to address challenges presented by strategic rivalry. The second session focused on how to strengthen regional and national mechanisms to promote their ability to deliver accountability and justice for victims of international crimes.
The US Institute of Peace’s Expert Working Group on Accountability in an Era of Strategic Rivalry studies the impact of strategic political rivalries on norms and institutions of accountability for the commission of atrocity crimes, with the goal of generating recommendations to strengthen global commitment to these norms.
