Director Professor Dr Safferling Participated in an ASP Side Event on the Impact of the Length of Proceedings on Reparative Justice

 

On 7 December 2023, the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations hosted a side event to the Assembly of State Parties to the Rome Statute on reparative justice and the length of proceedings and on the “multi-generational dimension of victimization for international crimes”. Academy Director Professor Dr Christoph Safferling was invited to present the study on the length of proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which was conducted by the Nuremberg Academy and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, with particular focus on the relevance of victims’ interests for the study. He also spoke about victim participation in German criminal procedure and recent reforms in this regard. ICC-Judge Rosario Aitala commented from the viewpoint of the ICC. Dr Yael Danieli, Co-founder of the Victims’ Rights Working Group within the Coalition of the ICC, spoke about traumata of victims of mass atrocities in a multi-generational perspective. (cs)
