General Information
What is the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
The Nuremberg Summer Academy is an annual two-week intensive summer course, which provides young professionals with an invaluable opportunity and stimulating learning experience to acquire or deepen their knowledge of substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law. Facilitated by leading international experts and practitioners from the International Criminal Court, other international and domestic courts and leading universities, participants acquire practical knowledge on the investigation, prosecution and adjudication of core international crimes. They will also have the opportunity to participate in study visits to the historic Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.
In 2019, for the first time, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy is organizing two editions of the Nuremberg Summer Academy: one in French and one in English.

When is the next Nuremberg Summer Academy taking place?
The Nuremberg Summer Academy 2019 will be held between 5 and 16 August 2019 in Nuremberg, Germany.
Who can apply for the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
The Nuremberg Summer Academy is open to young legal professionals and academics.
- Legal professionals: prosecutors, judges, lawyers or other legal professionals.
- Academics: individuals working on research projects or teaching international criminal law or other relevant disciplines at accredited universities.
Applicants should have a minimum of 3 years of professional experience (for more information see below "How do I calculate my years of experience?").
Priority will be given to young professionals directly involved in (or likely to be directly involved in) the investigation or prosecution of core international crimes, and to young professionals from conflict and post-conflict zones. Due consideration will be given to gender balance and equitable geographic representation.

How long does the Nuremberg Summer Academy last?
The Nuremberg Summer Academy lasts two weeks: from 5 to 16 August 2019.
If I participated in previous editions of the Nuremberg Summer Academy, can I reapply?
No. Participants can only attend the Nuremberg Summer Academy once. If you applied in the past but were not selected, you will be able to reapply.
Can I only attend part of the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
No. Full time participation and availability for the entire duration of the program is compulsory (from 5 to 16 August 2019 / with travel dates: from 4 to 17 August). Young professionals who are only available to attend part of the training will not be able to participate in the Nuremberg Summer Academy.
How do I calculate my years of experience? Does work experience as an intern count toward the number of years of experience?
The International Nuremberg Principles Academy follows the UN Guidelines for determination of level and step on recruitment to the professional category and above. Work experience can be acquired on a full-time or part-time basis. Work experience acquired on a part-time basis should be credited proportionately to the time worked. This applies to self-employment, including consultancies, internships and volunteer work. Internships only count as 50% of the work experience.
For example, for a six months internship, only 3 months can be added to your years of experience.
If you have less than 3 years of working experience but more than 33 months, your application may be considered.
Application process
How do I apply for the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
All applicants must complete an application through our online system.
Step 1: Provide your personal details.
Step 2: Fill out the application form. You will be asked to provide information on:
- Your language skills,
- Your education,
- Your work experience,
- Your knowledge of International Criminal Law and International Humanitarian Law, and
- Your availability for the Nuremberg Summer Academy.
- You will also be asked to upload your CV (in pdf – maximum three pages) and draft a statement of interest (maximum 600 words).
Step 3: Submit your application.
My country is not listed in the online application form. Can I apply?
Yes. Our online form only lists countries with ISO codes. If your country has not been assigned a code, such as Kosovo, please contact us directly at summeracademy@nurembergacademy.org.
What is the application deadline?
The application process will close on 15 April 2019 – at midnight CET. No application will be accepted beyond this date.
Can I apply to both the French and English edition of the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
No. Applicants may only apply to one Summer Academy, either the English edition or the French edition. If accepted to one edition (either the English or the French), it is not possible to selectively attend lectures in the other edition even if you are fluent in the other language.
Can I apply for specific lectures?
No. When you apply to the Nuremberg Summer Academy, you apply to the full program. Full time participation and availability for the entire duration of the program is expected.
How are applications evaluated?
Admission to the Nuremberg Summer Academy is competitive. A selection committee carefully reviews all applications. The committee strives to select the most qualified and motivated applicants using a scoring system based on the following criteria:
- Legal education in the relevant field
- Understanding of International Criminal Law and/or International Humanitarian Law
- Past and present professional experience working as prosecutors, judges, lawyers or other legal professionals or working on research projects or teaching in the fields of international criminal law or other relevant disciplines
- Direct involvement in the investigation or prosecution of core international crimes
- Proficiency in spoken and written English or French (depending on the edition of the Nuremberg Summer Academy selected)
- Personal motivation
- Originating from or working in conflict and post-conflict zones
- Gender balance and equitable geographic representation
When will I be informed of the result of my application?
Shortlisted applicants will be called for a Skype interview between April and May 2019. Final results will be communicated by the end of May 2019.
Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
I applied online, but I have not received any confirmation email.
Please check your spam box. If you did not receive any confirmation e-mail, it is possible that your application was not received by the International Nuremberg Principles Academy. You need to register again.
Please refrain from using business or academic e-mail addresses to which you will not have access before, during and after the Nuremberg Summer Academy.
Will I be notified if I have not been selected?
No. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Given the high number of applications, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy will not be able to answer individual queries related to the selection process.
All shortlisted candidates called for an interview will be notified of the outcome of their application by 15 June 2019.
How will I be notified if I have been shortlisted?
You will receive an email from the International Nuremberg Principles Academy informing you about the progress of your application and additional information about the selection process.
Languages
What are the language requirements for participating in the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
It is indispensable that you have a good working knowledge of either English (for the English edition) or French (for the French edition) in order to be able to follow the lectures. You are not required to provide us with official language proficiency certificates when applying.
However, if you have undertaken any language test (e.g. TOEFL), we strongly encourage you to mention it in your CV.
Are lectures simultaneously translated?
No. For the English edition, the lectures will be held in English and for the French edition, the lectures will be held in French. Please make sure you apply to the relevant edition.
Can I attend both the French and English edition/lectures?
No. Participants are only authorized to attend one edition (French or English). Mixing French and English lectures is also not allowed.
Fees and Scholarship
Do I need to pay course fees?
No. The Nuremberg Summer Academy is free of charge for participants. Participants are not required to pay any course fees.
Will the International Nuremberg Principles Academy offer scholarships to all selected participants?
Yes. The International Nuremberg Principles Academy provides full scholarships to all selected participants. Scholarships cover all costs including, visa expenses, flights, travel insurance, full board and lodging, daily allowance, field trips, and transportation.
Visa and travel
How can I get help in obtaining a visa to attend the Nuremberg Summer Academy in Germany?
The International Nuremberg Principles Academy will prepare a letter of invitation for those who need a visa to attend the Nuremberg Summer Academy. We will also assist you with your visa application.
Is travel insurance required?
No. The International Nuremberg Principles Academy will provide travel insurance for each selected participants.
Lectures and program
What are the lectures?
Young professionals will acquire or deepen their knowledge of substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law, as well as gain practical knowledge on the investigation, prosecution and adjudication of core international crimes.

When will I receive the program?
The final program will be made available on the website of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy shortly before the start of the Nuremberg Summer Academy 2019. Selected participants will also receive the final program by e-mail.
Do I need to study before attending the Nuremberg Summer Academy?
A reading list will be sent to selected participants at the end of June 2019. Selected participants are strongly advised to read the reading materials.
The Nuremberg Summer Academy aims to help you strengthen your knowledge of substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law and help you acquire practical knowledge on the investigation, prosecution and adjudication of core international crimes. You will find the start of the course a lot easier if you do some introductory reading before coming.
Are any visits part of the curriculum?
Four study visits are included in the program:
- Historic Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice,
- Memorium Nuremberg Trials,
- Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds, and
- Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.
Participants are free to visit additional sites not included in the program in their spare time.
Do I need to take care of my flight, accommodation, health insurance and transportation?
No. The International Nuremberg Principles Academy will book your flight in consultation with you and accommodation, subscribe a travel insurance for you, and organize your transportation.
Examinations and Certificates
Will a final exam take place?
Yes. Final exams take place on the last day of the Nuremberg Summer Academy. There are no exceptions to taking the final exam.
The final exam aims to assess your progress during the program. Results will have no impact on the delivery of the certificates.
Will I receive certificates for completing the program?
Yes. All participants who attended the full duration of the Nuremberg Summer Academy will receive a certificate during a ceremony held the last day of the program.
