The International Nuremberg Principles Academy organized an international conference dedicated to marking the 70th anniversary of the delivery of the judgment of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE). The event took place in the historic Courtroom 600 in the Nuremberg Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany, from 17 to 19 May 2018.
In light of the historical importance, this conference brought together more than 30 international experts in the field of international criminal law and related disciplines to discuss key aspects of the Tokyo judgment and highlight its legacies.
Following a formal opening and keynote speech, a series of panel discussions explored multiple facets of the IMTFE and its judgment. After a first panel on the IMTFE’s background and context, a roundtable discussion offered an in-depth comparative analysis to assess the similarities of the tribunals in Tokyo and Nuremberg. The following panels examined the Tokyo judgment in terms of substantive law and procedural law, obstacles and lessons learnt. The conference also shed light on the lasting impact that the Tokyo trial and judgment have on current international criminal law issues.
In addition to this full two-day conference program, the participants also benefited from receiving a detailed presentation on the history of Courtroom 600 and were able to visit the Memorium Nuremberg Trials.
