Launch of the Nuremberg Academy Lectures – Philippe Sands in Courtroom 600

It is with great pleasure that the International Nuremberg Principles Academy announces the launch of its Nuremberg Academy Lectures. We are particularly honoured that Professor Philippe Sands, British-French human rights lawyer, Professor of Law at University College London and author of seventeen books on international law, will deliver the inaugural lecture at Courtroom 600 in the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, on 24 November 2020. His book East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity has been widely acclaimed and has been awarded numerous prizes. He has appeared before many international courts, including, inter alia, the European Court of Justice, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

In his lecture ‘International Justice and Personal Stories: From East West Street to the The Ratline, and Beyond’, Professor Sands will discuss the origins of international criminal law in light of the 75th anniversary of the opening of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg and address contemporary developments of international criminal law. The lecture will be followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director of the Nuremberg Academy.

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the number of attendees at Courtroom 600 will be limited, access to the event is thus by invitation only.

The lecture will be held in English. The event will be live-streamed and the video will be available afterwards on the Nuremberg Academy Youtube channel. More information will be available here shortly.

The Nuremberg Academy Lectures explore topical issues at the intersection of international criminal law, transitional justice and policy. The International Nuremberg Principles Academy invites leading scholars and practitioners to deliver a lecture and engage in dialogue. Through its public lecture series featuring speakers of national and international renown, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy provides a forum for discussion around contemporary issues in international criminal law and promotes public understanding of international law.

The lecture series was launched in 2020 marking the 70th anniversary of the formulation of the Nuremberg Principles.
