Movie Screening and Panel Discussion: “Argentina, 1985”

 

The International Nuremberg Principles Academy co-organised an event dedicated to the movie “Argentina, 1985” (Santiago Mitre, 2022), at the Filmhaus Nürnberg on 3 June 2024. The internationally acclaimed film uses the first trial against the top leadership of the military Junta in 1985 to explore the difficulties of dealing with their crimes. Based on intensive research, it narrates the problems in obtaining evidence of the crimes covered up by the Junta and the continuing threat posed by the military. In addition, the movie also tackles on the lack of understanding within Argentinian civil society in relation to the efforts to bring the Junta to trial as well as the strategies used to get to grips with the numerous difficulties.

After the movie screening a short panel discussion revolved around the relevancy of the trial against the military Junta in Argentina and in Europe. The panellists were Dr Laura Clérico (University of Buenos Aires; Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), Esteban Cuya (Nuremberg Human Rights Center) and Wolfgang Kaleck (European Center for Civil and Human Rights). The event was moderated by Dr Pablo Gavira Díaz (International Nuremberg Principles Academy) and Dr Daniel Stahl (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg).
