Nuremberg Summer Academy for Young Professionals 2019

05 August 2019 - 16 August 2019

Nuremberg, Germany

The International Nuremberg Principles Academy held its annual Nuremberg Summer Academy for Young Professionals in Nuremberg from 5 to 16 August 2019. In addition to the Summer Academy in English language, which took place for the fifth time, the Nuremberg Academy offered for the first time also an edition in French, which took place in parallel. Young professionals, including lawyers, prosecutors, legal experts, UN staff members and academics, had the opportunity during the two-week intensive summer course to benefit from an inspiring learning environment in which they could acquire or deepen their knowledge of content and procedural aspects of international criminal law.

The faculty was composed of 30 international academics, staff of the ICC and other international tribunals, and experts in international criminal law. The courses combined lectures, case studies, and practical exercises to carry out the application-oriented design of this capacity building measure. Furthermore, the Nuremberg Summer Academy provided daily debriefings discussing key aspects of the lectures, training on the use of international criminal law databases, and several study visits.

Out of the 260 applications, 21 participants from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Colombia, Egypt, Gambia, Georgia, India, Iraq, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritius, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, and Ukraine were selected for the program in English. For the edition in French, the Nuremberg Academy received 283 applications, out of which 19 participants from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal, and Togo came to Nuremberg.

Given the large number of applications and the very high level of the participants in both courses, the Nuremberg Academy will from now on offer also the Nuremberg Summer Academy in French language on an annual basis.
