24 June 2019 - 26 June 2019

Abuja, Nigeria

The International Nuremberg Principles Academy and the Wayamo Foundation co-organized a three-day workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, from 24 to 26 June 2019. It was the seventh workshop for civilian and military investigators and prosecutors in the “Strengthening Justice and Accountability in Nigeria” workshop series, which started in December 2016.

The aim of the workshop was to further equip Nigerian investigators and prosecutors with the necessary expertise and skills to address the most serious and complex crimes, including crimes that may potentially fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Twenty civil prosecutors and six investigators from the Department of State Services, and, on the last day, a group of military investigators attended the workshop.

After the official opening by Natacha Bracq, Senior Officer for Training and Capacity Building at the Nuremberg Academy, and the Wayamo Foundation Director, Bettina Ambach, a panel of experts addressed various practical aspects of the prosecution of complex crimes. Presentations combined with group exercises enabled a fruitful dialogue and a stimulating learning atmosphere for all participants.

The following experts contributed to the workshop:

  • Adejoké Babington-Ashaye, International Law Specialist and former ICC Investigator;
  • Claus Molitor, ICC Situation Analyst at the Office of the Prosecutor;
  • Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Dygeus, Legal Advisor to Swedish Armed Forces HQ;
  • Mark Fallon, International Security Consultant and former Military Interrogator;
