Protestant City Academies Visit the Nuremberg Academy

23 September 2026

On 23 September 2026, representatives of several Protestant City Academies from across Germany visited the International Nuremberg Principles Academy. Deputy Director Dr Viviane Dittrich delivered a lecture on key developments in international criminal law, the politics of international law, and current challenges facing the field.

The subsequent discussion addressed a range of pressing issues, including the disregard for international law, growing challenges to the International Criminal Court, perceptions of double standards in the application of international law, and the role and responsibility of civil society. Further topics included the relationship between peace and justice as well as ecocide and environmental crimes.

The programme also included visits to the Memorium Nuremberg Trials and the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds, as well as meetings with Martina Mittenhuber and Helga Riedl from the Human Rights Office of the City of Nuremberg and with Professor Dr Heiner Bielefeldt from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The visit formed part of a conference trip to Nuremberg organised and led by Dr Ekkehard Wohlleben, Director of the Protestant City Academy in Nuremberg.

The visit to the Nuremberg Academy provided an opportunity for exchange on current developments in international criminal law and the broader challenges surrounding the investigation and prosecution of international crimes and the implementation of international law. (vd)
