Students from Bayreuth University Visited the Nuremberg Academy

30 January 2026

On 30 January 2026, a group of contemporary history students from Bayreuth University, accompanied by Professor Dr Julia Eichenberg, paid an academic visit to the Nuremberg Academy. The delegation was welcomed by Project Officer Dr Pablo Gavira Díaz, who offered an engaging introduction to the Academy’s work and its historical and institutional links to the Nuremberg Trials.

As part of the programme, Philipp Graebke presented the project Digital Nuremberg Military Tribunals (DigiNMT), led by Professor Dr Christoph Safferling, Director of the Nuremberg Academy. Mr Graebke delivered a detailed overview of the project’s background, development and significance, highlighting both key findings and the challenges involved in the digitalisation of approximately 2.5 million pages of trial records.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, the original venue of the Nuremberg Trials. Participants explored several historically significant spaces, including Courtroom 627, which hosted parts of the subsequent Nuremberg proceedings, and Room 200, which served as the offices of US Chief Prosecutors Robert H. Jackson (1945–1946) and Telford Taylor (1946–1949). In addition, the group visited rooms formerly used by Lieselotte Balte, Francis Biddle and Dr Aline Chalufour, which are now commemorated with plaques highlighting their contributions to the Trial of the Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal. This immersive experience allowed participants to engage directly with the tangible legacy of international criminal justice.
