On 18 November 2025, a group of students from Mainz University paid an academic visit to the Nuremberg Academy. Dr Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director of the Nuremberg Academy, gave a lecture in German on "The Nuremberg Trials 80 Years On: International Criminal Justice Today" as teaching faculty of the interdisciplinary workshop.
The lecture covered the development of international criminal law since 1945 to the present day, with a focus on the legal and political significance of the Nuremberg trials, the Nuremberg Principles, the ad hoc tribunals, hybrid courts and the International Criminal Court. Current developments and present-day challenges were a focus during the discussion, including state cooperation, achievements and jurisdictional limitations, the difficulty of securing arrests and the uneven global implementation of the Nuremberg Principles.
The academic session was followed by a guided tour of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice and Courtroom 600, the historic site of the Nuremberg Trials. The visit in Nuremberg was Day 2 of the two-day Q+ workshop "From Nuremberg to The Hague - plus a visit of the historic courtroom". The Q+ programme is an additional programme of Mainz University allowing participants continuing education opportunities together with students of other disciplines with a focus on current questions in science and society.
