The Nuremberg Academy co-hosted a side event held during International Law Week in New York in the margins of the 80th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on 29 October 2025. Dr Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director of the Nuremberg Academy, moderated the event entitled „80 Years after the Nuremberg Trials – Where do we stand today on the crime of aggression and crimes against humanity?”.
Eighty years after the opening of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, this high-level event took stock of the legacy of Nuremberg and of the development of international criminal law, with particular emphasis on the two crimes at the heart of the Nuremberg trials: crimes against humanity and crime of aggression. The panel reviewed legal and policy developments on aggression and crimes against humanity since Nuremberg, discussed the relationship between the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court in the context of the crime of aggression, highlighted the necessity for a convention on the prevention and punishment of crimes against humanity and explored possible ways forward and practical recommendations for policymakers.

- Prof. Leila Sadat, Washington University Law School, Former Special Adviser on Crimes against Humanity to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court
