On May 9-10, 2025, the 20th session of the Working Group on International Criminal Law (Arbeitskreis Völkerstrafrecht) took place in Karlsruhe, hosted at the Office of the Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice. The Working Group on International Criminal Law is the largest forum for German-speaking experts in the field. Its annual meetings, hosted in different cities, bring together up to 100 scholars and practitioners to engage in discussions on pressing questions and recent developments in international criminal law.
Jens Rommel, Federal Public Prosecutor General since 2024, opened the event together with Professor Florian Jeßberger from Berlin.
A key focus of this year’s conference was the panel on international criminal law policy. Moderated by Professor Dr. Christoph Safferling, Director of the Nuremberg Academy, the panel addressed sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), the review of the Kampala Amendments, and considerations regarding the establishment of a special tribunal for Ukraine.
