From 23-25 October 2024, the Nuremberg Academy in collaboration with the Academy of Justice of Armenia held the second pilot workshop for legal professionals in Yerevan, Armenia. The training entitled ‘Advancing International Criminal Law in Armenia’ introduced participants to international criminal law and the practice of the international criminal court (ICC), with the aim of enhancing national legal capacities to address international crimes. Participants included judges from the court of cassation, court of appeal and court of first instance.
Led by international criminal law experts, Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, Professor Raymond Murphy, Dr Ines Peterson and Vahe Grigoryan and Nuremberg Academy staff, Senior Officer Darleen Seda and Project Officer Dr Pauline Martini, the training explored the elements of core international crimes and evaluated practical challenges of adjudicating such crimes, including handling of digital evidence. The workshop also tackled various fora for adjudicating international crimes while examining the complementarity principle. Practical exercises and case studies were also featured which contributed to interactive discussions among the participants.
Apart from the training, Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, in her capacity as member of the Advisory Council of the Nuremberg Academy and Darleen Seda, held meetings at the Constitutional Court and the National Assembly of Armenia. Vice President of the Constitutional Court, Vahe Grigoryan, presented the activities of the court, its achievements and ongoing challenges. Vladimir Vardanyan, Chair of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs discussed the process and status of adoption of the implementing law following Armenia’s ratification of the Rome Statute.
